Removing the Barriers to Effective Coaching For Clients Grieving a Loss

I was recently having lunch with a counselor friend. He told me he had discovered in his coaching practice that before a client could begin to move forward, he always had to explore with them, the significant loses in their life, even if that wasn’t the reason the client originally wanted coaching. If loss and grief were present, he said, the client had to come to terms with loss, before they would ever be able to move forward in their life.

Grief and Loss During the Holidays

You only have to follow the lead stories in the news to realize that there will be alot of people suffering grief and loss during the holidays this year. Whether its Elizabeth Edwards' adult daughter, twelve year old and ten year old, losing their Mother after a long battle with cancer; or all of those company personnel who work for companies that have begun laying off workers before the end of the year; or people who will spend the holidays alone or away from home due to military service- it's not a happy time of year for everyone.

The many forms of grief and loss

Whe people think of grief, they usually think about the death of a loved one. While this is the most universal form of grief, since most persons who live any lenght of time will experience it often in a life time; there are many life experiences that cause a person to grieve and many forms of loss. Persons can grieve a loss of innocence, the loss of a dream, the loss of a relationship, the loss of a close friendship when someone moves far away. Persons can grieve their career when they are laid off or retire. At the third Annual Grief and Loss Conference, we will be talking about some of the grief and loss people experience and share tools to minister to persons "living" through loss. What forms of loss have been the most dificult for you? What emotions did you grapple with most? Let's start a dialog.

Grief and Loss

We have been asked a good question, "Who should attend the Grief and Loss Conference?" Pastors, Stephen's Ministers, Counselors, and Coaches, as well as persons who have a heart to work with Christians who have experienced grief and loss (whether their loss is of a loved one, a teen who is grieving, a person who has experienced a divorce, or loss due to infertility) make excellent Grief Facilitators.

Headquarters for Go Fish!
Greenville, South Carolina
3-5 day training event
The Go Fish! faculty is pleased to announce that due to the positive response from our grief coaches and pastors, our third year of grief training will be expanded. Not only will we be offering the "basic" grief training, and Grief Rite Bible study training we have offered in the past, we will also be offering advanced grief and loss electives. Be sure to let us know if you are interrested in learning more about the advanced courses in grief. Listed below is the description of the "basic" grief training and Bible study.

Join the Go Fish Faculty (http://www.gofishnow.com) for this exciting, break-through Grief Training. The Grief Facilitation discipleship processSM, created by Master Instructors,  Susan Singleton, J.D., and Kathryn McColskey, Ph.D., is a remarkable tool that is based upon the premise that persons who have lost a loved one benefit from participating in a personalized, private facilitation 8 months to a year or more after the death of their loved one. As a result, McColskey and Singleton have designed an interactive computer template or hardcopy text, to be used by a trained facilitator who guides a person who is grieving through the 5-6 hour, Bible-based process in a "day away" event or in 5-6 one hour "consecutive sessions" format. (Perfect tool for counselors, coaches, and Stephen Ministers.) This one-to-one discipleship processSM  uses a series of grief Scriptures as the focal point for a question/answer/reflective dialogue between the participant and facilitator. Through this process the participant is empowered to discover the Scripture's relevance to their personal grief event, and realize the ways God brings hope and healing in this season in their life.
The quality of the materials provided and the training that you will receive are excellent. The training and manual will provide step-by-step instructions to guide you through a Grief Facilitation. Check the sidebar to read the enthusiastic comments of participants who attended the grief training at The Cove in 2010. We anticipate tremendous interest in this expanded training- so don't miss out- reserve your space today.
